Experimental Architecture Biennial #03 presents 50 unique projects of Zaha Hadid Architects that have been created for various clients but have not been built yet. This wide collection of different architectural typologies showcases a colorful spectrum of brilliant, carefully and thoughtfully designed proposals. Zaha Hadid Architects do not specialize only in design practice, but also offer alternative and contemporary strategies to bring you the best quality and options for presentation to interested parties and the wider public. Explore some of the selected projects through Virtual Reality or experience their space in 3D printed models.

Experimental Architecture Biennial Workshops

at Jaroslav Fragner Gallery
Betlémské nám. 169/5A, 110 00 Praha

Workshop Grotto 4.0

Workshop description

A two-day workshop is focused on advanced fabrication, using a wax-extruder prototype and robotic arm IIWA. The project is inspired by aesthetic of a baroque grotto, which converts natural morphology into a man-made space, following the principle “artificialia et naturalia”. The workshop provides elementary knowledge of IIWA robot work-flow, basics of robotic prototyping and offline programming of a robot with an extruder.

Particular components, based on aesthetics of a baroque grotto, will be created during the workshop. These components will be merged together into one common object, that will be exposed during the EAB III exhibition in the GJF Gallery.

Workshop venue, date & fee

14th – 15th September 2017

Workshop Hacking Paper

Workshop description

The workshop is focused on material properties research and fabrication of specific shelter form as aggregation out of paper elements. Usually, we perceive paper as a soft and delicate material. We will speculate and design patterns and borders to modify the material into more structural, stronger and smarter form transforming the given environment of Betlémské náměstí. Throughout the workshop, you will learn digital tools at an intermediate level and basics of fabrication with laser-cutting technique.

We will design and create a shelter as a temporary structure on Betlémské náměstí, that can function as a pocket for a party, event, exhibition, presentation or any collective or individual privacy. The build project will be part of the Experimental Architecture Biennial exhibition until 27th October 2017.

Workshop Meta Matter

Workshop description

The workshop will conduct a research into rule-based design systems, which examine modes of interaction between the designer (human) and the logical constraints of algorithms (machines) in the process of design, creating virtual design ecologies, which challenge the conventional notion of space and matter. A set of programmed behaviors and rules form Computational Design Engines, which are used to design and digitally grow series of architectural systems.

The workshop is planned as an intensive 3 day studio-based course. During the workshop, we will be using multiple platforms for computational/algorithmic design – with focus on scripting in Processing/JAVA and Python, introduction to 3D modeling techniques in Maya and Rhino/Grasshopper. The goal is to introduce students to techniques and methodologies of algorithmic design and procedural modeling, through the use and customization of pre-made scripts and enable them for further individual work.

Workshop venue, date & fee
